CITY Opera Audition Announcement

CITY Opera seeks professional singer/actors for their inaugural 2015/16 season. 

CITY Opera is a new opera company in San Diego dedicated to building community by turning beautiful music into stunning theatre and contributing to the dynamic reimagining of opera in America for the 21st century. We champions new and contemporary works in English, works by American composers, non-traditional repertoire, and fundamental re-conceptualizations of standard operas. With an emphasis on community building, we tell stories through music that are rooted in our unique citizenry.

CITY Opera seeks singer/actors for the following roles and productions. 

Date: Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Time: 6:30pm-8:30pm

Location: Rhapsody Hall (M113), Music Building, SDSU

What to prepare: A Baroque aria in English and one other selection of your choice, also in English. For men who would like to audition for both productions, your second selection must be a Contemporary Art Song or Aria in English.

Queen of Carthage

“Queen of Carthage” is a re-imaginging of Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas”. With music by Purcell and a new libretto by Cory Hibbs.

Rehearsals September 19 - October 7. 

Performances October 9, 10, and 11.


Dido, Queen of Carthage (Mezzo-soprano/Soprano, mid 30s - 40s) Dido contemplates suicide but is saved by her love for Aeneas. However, she unknowingly sabotages her love through magic by becoming the Sorceress. Looking for a dynamic singer/actress who can sing both the role of Dido and the Sorceress. 

Belinda (Soprano, 20s) Belinda is Dido’s younger, well-meaning sister. Her only family and best friend.

Aeneas (Baritone/Tenor, late 40s-50s) Aeneas is Dido’s love. A world-weary solider looking for a place to call home, he sees salvation in Dido.

Man Servant (Tenor, 20s) Belinda’s childhood friend and son of one of the servants, he is now her personal secretary. He is gay, flamboyant, and overly dramatic. 

Handmaid 1 (Soprano) Dido’s servant and her partner in magic. 

Handmaid 2 (Mezzo-soprano) Dido’s servant and her partner in magic.

The Andrée Expedition

Based on a true story about three men who take a hot air ballon to the north pole, “The Andrée Expedition” by Dominick Argento is a song-cycle being fully-staged as an operatic production.

Strindberg (Baritone) - Young, “A latter-day Don Quixote”, Romantic, Optimistic.

Frænkel (Baritone) - Lost, Realist, Uncertain of why he chose to go on the expedition. Powerfully Observant.

Andrée (Baritone) - Seeking Glory, Headstrong, Certain, The leader of the expedition.
