City Opera

Music for Story's Sake

Education and Outreach at City Opera

With over thirty years combined experience in education and outreach, the co-artistic directors of City Opera prioritize relationships built through learning and discovery, and believe that communities are built on shared experiences. City opera is implementing a multi-tiered education and outreach program over the next three to five years to help us achieve this goal.

City Opera is partnering with The San Diego Unified School District Title 1 Learning Through the Arts Program, San Diego County Office of Education’s Juvenile and Court Schools, UCSD and SDSU for our upcoming season.

Here are some of the school programs CITY Opera offers this season!

Study Guides

All Ages

Study Guides to the season’s operas are available online and explore the basics of the art form as well as the specific operas we are presenting this year. Study guides facilitate discussions around themes, historical context, the music, characters, and stories presented. The guides are a free resource available to all our audiences especially: students, teachers, and community groups to promote and better understand their upcoming performance experience.

SDUSD Title 1 Learning Through the Arts Program

Grades K-12

City Opera is one of the local not-for-profit arts organizations selected to offer Assemblies, School Tours and Artist Residencies through this groundbreaking arts partnership with the San Diego Unified School District, which launched in the fall of 2015. Everyone wants to see students succeed as they prepare for lives and the workforce of the 21st century. The jobs of today require creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration.  The arts provide a useful hands-on process for students and teachers to practice these 21st century tools. Under the Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, there is flexibility to use Federal Title I funds to integrate arts in education to achieve Title I goals. City Opera is currently working with ten teachers in grades k,1 and 3 at Cherokee Point Elementary.

STEAM Residency

Grades 4-12

City Opera works within the STEAM initiative to help make connections between the arts and sciences. Each STEAM Residency is 4-6 sessions in length and can accommodate 1 classroom. Upcoming school residencies include sessions that link music with math, biology, physics, and neuroscience.

City Opera Field Trips

Grades 4-12

Get a behind the scenes look at opera.  Join City Opera to examine what it takes to put on a new show. This half-day experience is an opportunity to identify and analyze dramatic themes in a production through sets, costumes and performance. Participate in a series of workshops with the cast, designers, conductor and singers after watching an excerpt of the current production.

The Opera Composers Project

Grades 6-12

This is an opportunity for students to work with professional musicians and performers while composing and original opera based on a familiar piece of literature. This program consists of 6-week residencies for 2 classes at multiple schools.
